What is a Community Association?
Massey Place Community Association is a group of volunteers from your neighborhood that run with the help of the City of Saskatoon. The goal: "Community associations enhance the quality of life for residents in neighborhoods throughout Saskatoon." We are here to learn, play and grow together. We are a non-profit entity that plans and administrates seasonal sport, culture, and recreation programs at a minimal cost. We strive to keep you informed on neighborhood developments. We are in touch with our community police liaison, our city councillors and various other personnel that help make our community as safer and better place to live. Our community coordinator attends all our meetings and provides information from the city about grants, initiatives and other activities we can get involved in to improve our community and she provides guidance and support on activities.
Why Community Associations?
Community Associations allow us to build relationships with neighbors, provide input on neighborhood improvements needed, create quality neighborhood programs, and give residents a sense of belonging. By knowing one another and working together we provide safer, well cared for neighborhoods.
Where does the money come from?
Community Associations are granted a small budget yearly from the city to focus on programming and events in our own neighborhoods. There are four different grants budgeted to us each year that are based on the activities of the previous year. There is an Operating Grant which covers insurance, annual reporting and day to day operation such as mailboxes and newsletters. There is a Programming Grant which helps subsidize the cost of instructors and programming so we can provide you the lowest possible price for various classes and programs we offer. Rink Operating Grant which goes to shack rental, utilities, small repairs, tools and equipment for the rink. The fourth grant available to us is what is called a
Cost-as-a-Barrier Grant this grant money is intended to help families who can't afford to pay for community association activities. For this grant we are able to fund one person per family for one activity a season. More family members may apply and could be granted a second activity if the number of requests and the costs are not in excess of our budget. A family can pay part of the cost of an activity and we can cover the remaining fee with this grant or we can cover the entire activity fee. We are partnering with schools in our community to help ensure families that need the support get the support. If you don't feel comfortable sharing with us that you need this assistance please share it with your school community liaison who can contact us.
Why buy a membership?
Memberships help us give the community more. Memberships can be used to provide a free activity, to lower the cost of activities even further or allow us to provide more events or improvements. Your membership allows you to vote at the Annual General Meeting. Come find out how that money will be spent for the next calendar year and have a say in what direction you want us to go next with our community.
